"The midwives in route birth-European experiences in comparison", this is the title of the symposium that saw the participation of midwives from France, England, Portugal, and representatives of Italian scientific and medical associations, to promote moments of exchange profitable for the profession. "We are confronted on the route birth than skills, models and tools to work in the countries of the European Union, taking into account that today there are precise regulations” explains Miriam GUANA President of the College of midwives of Brescia and of the national federation colleges midwives Italy.

The theme of birth as the central topic of the conference is also linked to a national research carried out in Brescia with ministerial funds to investigate - through a scheme of data collection - such as psycho-social variables can affect the outcome of childbirth.

A topical issue is that of the free movement of midwives, who has encouraged the sharing of professionalism and care models in the “midwifery” and the consolidation at European level associations and networks devoted, as the Network of European midwifery which sees regulators as a whole, the participation of professional associations of midwives in Europe, and aims to maintain direct relationships with the European Parliament for the protection of the profession and public health: in particular, the network intends to involve governmental organizations in monitoring the 'European directive on recognition of professional qualifications in force in Italy since 2007, revising the Directive, which will hopefully be completed by 2012.

In an ever more globalized even the College of Brescia, which with 408 members, is the tenth city to the largest number of midwives, is now receiving requests for professional women from Eastern Europe, South America and the Middle East.
